Truck Trailer Jackknifing
Truck trailer jackknifing might be caused by brake failure, improper braking or bad wet slippery weather condition. It occurs when the tractor's drive axle brakes lock up, and the trailer skids and stops only after it forms an angle of 90 degrees with the tractor. It could also lead to rollover. Most of the cases, jackknife occurs when driver brakes hard in slippery weather situation.

Avoid Jackknifing

  • Drive according to the road/weather condition - Keeping your distance , driving slowly, and braking gently will keep you in control when the weather situation is uncertain.
  • Avoid braking when turning at the same time - Brake in a straight line before the turn and slow down a little more than necessary. Driver axles can lockup more quickly when braking on a turn and the trailer can push it from behind.
  • Release the brakes if skid detected - If the tractor begins to skid, it should be corrected by releasing the brakes and steering into the skid. This must be done before the skid becomes a jackknife.
